The frayed edges of public space are Boyscout Designer’s field of work.

The starting point for this work is the conflict that arises when the design of public space leads to extreme regulation, often prioritising control and efficiency, which makes its users passive. Scouts, on the other hand, learn to face their environment actively, attentively, and responsibly. Boyscout Designer bridges these two worlds, bringing together Social Design and Scouting. It is a mindset at the intersection of individual action and collective responsibility.

The Boyscout Designer knows how to bend rules when necessary for the benefit of the design. He works from the user’s point of view, stays close to the people who use the space, and ensures he is involved in the community for which he works. He moves between village and city, constantly observing, keeping his eyes open for new initiatives, places, objects, and services. As a Boyscout Designer, he shares his experiences both online and offline and combines design with research. The Boyscout Designer creates guerrilla interventions that provoke reactions in towns and villages—not as an end in itself, but to encourage a more cheerful, stimulating, and better-used public space.

Working with a bottom-up approach, designer Bouke Bruins translates the wishes and needs of people into humorous installations and interventions with social impact. His designs and concepts function as tools to research public space and to reflect on his role as a designer within it.

We are open to site-specific commissions: designing interventions tailored to the needs and dynamics of a particular place and its community.

In addition, we teach and run workshops on social design, public space, and participatory, bottom-up methods, always hands-on, and context driven.
